Title: Data Science and Imaging the Black Hole Shadows
“In April 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope Collaboration (EHTC) released the first image of the black hole shadow in the M87 galaxy. In May 2022, the image of the black hole shadow in our own Milky Way galaxy was revealed. The EHTC has over 300 members from various backgrounds and countries. I have been involved in this project as a data scientist for over nine years and have collaborated with EHTC members to develop a new imaging method. The EHT is a huge, Very Long Baseline Interferometer (VLBI), which differs from optical telescopes in that some computation is required to obtain a single image. Black hole imaging is also very interesting from a data-scientific viewpoint. In this talk, I will explain how we developed the new imaging technique and created the final images through our discussions.”
Shiro Ikeda is a professor at the Institute of Statistical Mathematics. He has been working in the field of applied mathematics, which includes, but is not limited to, signal processing, information theory, information geometry, statistics, and astrostatistics.
