TITLE
Confident Region (CoRe) Approaches for Variational Quantum Eigensolvers

SPEAKER
Prof. Prof. Shinichi Nakajima (BIFOLD)

ABSTRACT
Variational quantum eigensolvers (VQEs) are hybrid quantum classical algorithms for estimating the ground-state energy of given quantum Hamiltonians. The classical part of VQEs corresponds to solving a noisy black-box optimization problem, for which we recently developed three approaches based on Gaussian processes (GPs) and a notion of confident region (CoRe)—the region in the search space where the predictive uncertainty is bounded by a required accuracy. This talk starts from introducing VQEs and CoRe, and then explains how the physical prior knowledge on VQEs are incorporated to our GP-based methods for Bayesian optimization, quantum computation cost minimization, and stochastic gradient descent.

BIOGRAPHY
Shinichi Nakajima is the lead of the Independent Research Group, Probabilistic Modeling and Inference in The Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data (BIFOLD), Technische Universität Berlin. He received the master degree on physics in 1995 from Kobe university, and worked with Nikon Corporation until September 2014 on statistical analysis, image processing, and machine learning. He received the doctoral degree on computer science in 2006 from Tokyo Institute of Technology. His research interest is in theory and applications of machine learning, in particular, Bayesian inference, generative modeling, explainable artificial intelligence, and machine learning applications in sciences.
