Title: Cerebellar computational model 50 years after Marr-Albus

Abstract:
The Marr-Albus model of cerebellar computation is one of the most enduring in computational neuroscience. Although some of the initial predictions have not been supported by more recent research, the original model remains the only widely-accepted explanation for plasticity and learning in the cerebellum. In this talk I will discuss the Marr-Albus model in the context of more recent data and more recent computational theory. In particular, I will revisit the concept of “Expansion Coding” that is central to its computational power and the ability to learn nonlinear functions. I will provide a new interpretation of the cerebellum’s role in motor control, taking into account the input/output connectivity and the need for stabilization and control of stochastic dynamics with delayed sensory feedback.
