In collaboration with Tohoku University, TAKAYAMA Jun, Visiting Scientist, and Gen TAMIYA, Team Leader of Statistical Genetics Team, have completed and released the Japanese reference genome (JG1), which is a high-precision reference sequence applicable to whole human genome analyses as a reference. JG1 was constructed by analyzing the genomes of three Japanese individuals by high-coverage, long-read next-generation sequencing technologies. JG1 has attracted increasing attention as a potential alternative to the international reference genome *1 used thus far.

*1. International reference genome:The human genome sequence constructed by the Human Genome Project during the 1990s and 2000s. It has now been maintained by the Genome Reference Consortium. Most next-generation sequencing analyses use the genome sequence as a reference.
